Ingredients

  • 200 g Granulated white sugar
  • 2–4 tbsp (2 tbsp = light brown, 4 tbsp = dark brown) Unsulphured molasses

Method

  1. Measure white sugar into large bowl.
  2. Drizzle molasses over sugar (start with 2 tbsp for light brown).
  3. Mix with fork or fingers → rub mixture together until molasses evenly coats sugar granules (≈2–5 minutes).
  4. Continue mixing/rubbing until no large molasses clumps remain and color is uniform.
  5. If too dry, add molasses ½ tbsp at a time → if too wet/sticky, add more white sugar 1 tbsp at a time.
  6. Store in airtight container or zip bag — keeps indefinitely (may harden slightly; break up clumps before use).
  7. Makes ≈220–240 g — homemade light or dark brown sugar for baking, sauces, or coffee.
