Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Sweet cheese
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Chopped walnuts

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter, then set aside, about 2 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the unsalted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, about 4 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together sweet cheese, large eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth, about 2 minutes, then add the chopped walnuts and mix until well combined.
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms, about 4 minutes, then knead the dough for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch (6 mm) and place in the prepared baking dish, then bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown, about 10 minutes per side.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes, then cut into diamond-shaped pieces and serve warm, about 5 minutes, then let cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. To serve, drizzle with additional honey if desired, and garnish with chopped walnuts, about 2 minutes, then serve warm and enjoy.
  9. The gata is ready when it is golden brown and firm to the touch, then let it cool and serve, about 10 minutes, then garnish with chopped walnuts if desired.
