Ingredients
- 500g Day-old bread (cubed)
- 1 large Onion (chopped)
- 4 Celery stalks (chopped)
- 500ml Vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp Fresh sage (chopped)
- 100g Butter or vegan alternative
- To taste Salt and pepper
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180°C and grease a large baking dish (about 23x33cm) with butter or oil. This recipe serves 8-10 people as a side dish, perfect for a holiday gathering.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and celery, sautéing for 8-10 minutes until softened and translucent, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add the cubed bread to a large mixing bowl. Pour the sautéed vegetables over the bread, including any remaining butter from the skillet.
- Sprinkle in the chopped sage, salt, and pepper. Gradually pour in the vegetable broth, starting with 400ml, and toss gently with a wooden spoon until the bread is evenly moistened but not soggy. If needed, add the remaining broth.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and crispy. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving alongside your main holiday dish.
