Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 2 cups canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried basil

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), then cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions, and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high until shimmering, about 2 minutes, then add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned, 5–6 minutes.
  3. Add onion, garlic, carrots, and celery, and cook stirring occasionally until the vegetables are tender, 8–10 minutes, then add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, beef broth, and basil, and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together, 20–25 minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the cooked lasagna noodles, the meat sauce, and the grated Parmesan cheese, then transfer the mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish, and top with additional Parmesan cheese and mozzarella cheese.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking until the cheese is melted and bubbly, 10–15 minutes, then let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
